Salt-free questions, answered straight
Is a salt-free conditioner the same as a water softener?
No — and it’s the key thing to know. A softener removes hardness minerals using salt. A salt-free conditioner doesn’t remove them; it changes how they form so they don’t stick as scale. No salt, but the minerals stay in your water. For very hard water, a true softener still works better.
Does a salt-free conditioner need power or a drain?
Depends on the unit. The Halo H2 Zero Ultimate needs no salt, no electricity, no drain, and no backwash. The Navien saltless system is electronic, so it does use power. Neither uses salt.
Will salt-free protect my water heater and pipes?
Yes — controlling scale is exactly what these systems do, which helps protect water heaters, fixtures, and appliances. What they won’t do is give you the slippery soft-water feel or remove spotting the way a salt softener does. See our water filtration overview for the full picture.
How do I know if salt-free is right for my home?
A water test. If your hardness is moderate, or you’re on septic or avoiding salt, salt-free is often a great fit. If it’s very hard, we’ll be honest and point you to a softener. The test decides — and a recommendation isn’t guaranteed without it.
