Gas rules in Sonoma County
Outdoor gas is still allowed. A few projects changed in 2026.
California's 2025 Energy Code took effect January 1, 2026. Most backyard projects are unaffected, and your existing gas lines and appliances are grandfathered. We confirm what is allowed at your address before we start. Read our outdoor gas line guide for the details.
- BBQs, outdoor kitchens, fire pits, fire tables and patio heaters are still allowed, with a permit
- On a new pool or major remodel, a gas pool heater can only back up solar or a heat pump
- In the Bay Area air district (Santa Rosa, Petaluma, Sonoma), newly installed gas water heaters are restricted starting January 1, 2027

Do you work on both natural gas and propane?
Yes, for homes and businesses, on both natural gas and propane.
Can you add a gas line for a new range, dryer or BBQ?
Yes. We run new lines and extensions sized for the appliance, then connect it and leak-check it.
Do gas line jobs need a permit?
Nearly all do, including outdoor lines for a grill, fire pit or pool heater. We pull the permit, pressure-test the line and have the work inspected, so it is done right and signed off.
I think I smell gas. What should I do?
Leave the building and take everyone with you. Don't touch light switches or anything that could spark. From a safe distance, call 911 and PG&E at 1-800-743-5000. Once the area is safe, book the soonest opening and our leak detection team locates and repairs the leak.
Can I still add a gas line for a BBQ or fire pit in Sonoma County?
Yes. Outdoor gas grills, fire pits, fire tables and patio heaters are not restricted by California's energy or air-quality rules. The line still needs a permit, a licensed contractor and a pressure test.
Can I install a gas pool heater?
Not as the main heat source for a new pool or major remodel. Since January 1, 2026, the main pool heating has to be solar or a heat pump, and a gas heater can only serve as backup. Existing pool heaters are not affected.
Does a tankless water heater need a bigger gas line?
Often, yes. Most tankless units need a larger gas line than the old tank used. We check your gas supply during the free assessment and include any upsizing in your fixed price. See tankless water heaters.
Can I run a gas line myself?
We don't recommend it. California requires gas work to be done by a licensed contractor, with a permit and an inspected pressure test. A loose fitting, the wrong pipe or a missing sediment trap can cause a leak, a fire or carbon monoxide.
