Shut off the water

Whole house: the main shutoff is usually where the line enters the house — garage, crawlspace, or the box at the street. Turn it clockwise until it stops.

Kill the local valve instead, if you can

One fixture flooding? Toilets and sinks have a small oval valve on the supply line under or behind them. Water heater leaking? Close the valve on the cold line at the top of the tank.
