Heat pump water heaters — the one the rebates favor
It moves heat instead of making it — the same trick as a refrigerator, run in reverse — so it uses 3–4x less energy than a standard electric tank. Here’s how they work, the honest trade-offs, and what the 2026 rebates actually mean.

Where they genuinely shine
Not sales copy — the trade-offs are in the next section.
What the brochure skips
Every one of these is manageable — but you should hear them from us before you buy, not after.
Where the money actually is
The federal water-heater tax credit ended December 31, 2025 — but California moved its money toward heat pump water heaters, not away. Depending on the program window and your income bracket, BayREN, Sonoma Clean Power, and Golden State Rebates can take a real bite out of the installed cost (TECH Clean California’s single-family program opens and closes through the year). Programs change constantly — when we quote your job, we check what’s open that week and tell you exactly what you qualify for. No guessing off an old blog post.
Installed right, told straight
Sizing to your household’s real hot-water pattern, placement where the unit can breathe (and where its condensate can legally drain), the electrical circuit handled, permit pulled, inspection passed, old unit hauled away. If your panel is full or your space is tight, we’ll tell you before you spend a dollar — and if a different technology fits your home better, we’ll say that too.

Honest comparisons, no spin: tank vs. heat pump and tankless vs. heat pump. Leaning gas tankless? Here’s our tankless page and what one costs installed.
Heat pump water heater FAQs
Do they work in Sonoma County’s climate?+
Yes — they’re happiest pulling heat from air between about 40°F and 90°F, which describes a Sonoma County garage nearly year-round. Cold snaps just shift them into hybrid mode.
Will I run out of hot water?+
Sized right, no. Recovery is slower than gas, so sizing matters more than with other types — we size to your actual household pattern, and hybrid mode covers heavy-use days.
How long do they last?+
Typically 12–15 years. Annual maintenance is light: a condensate check and air filter cleaning.
What do the rebates actually cover?+
It changes through the year as programs open, close, and refill. That’s why we check live program status when we quote — you get the real number for that week, not a stale promise.
Do I need a 240-volt circuit?+
Most models, yes. If your panel is full, newer 120-volt plug-in models work for some households — placement and usage decide it, and we’ll tell you which camp you’re in.
Curious what you’d qualify for?
We check live rebate programs with every quote. Upfront pricing, in writing.
